Out With The Old, In With The New: Are TVs Already History? Can i watch tv programs on my pc? Walk through any college campus and take a look through the dorms and you will realize while most students own televisions, most don’t even watch them. Even the television rooms in most dorms remain unused because students don’t have the time to watch television. So while their parents back home (and other members of the older generation of American citizens) search for fancy, expensive HD televisions to decorate their living room, the younger generation has their heads buried in their computers.

Why is this, you ask? Ever since the takeover of pirating on the internet, the communications industry has found it incredibly difficult to keep pace with their even faster-paced audience. Take, for example, Funimation Inc. In order to counter the vast number of their shows being pirated, torrented, and generally spread illegally across the internet like a fevered wildfire, they chose to put free videos on their website and across YouTube. So in addition to the innumerable episodes of any television show being readily available online, college undergraduates now have a ready source of legal television waiting to be loaded on their computer. The formula is simple: supply and demand. The internet has a huge, not always legal supply.

To be able to watch what show you want when you want instead of arbitrarily flipping through television channels is far more appealing. Add to that the rising costs of cable due to greedy independent monopolies and the stereotype of broke college students and you have a recipe for trouble. Now look at our older generation. I’m pretty sure that we all know someone over the age of 65 who has no clue how to make their fancy-shmancy DVD player stop blinking 12:00 incessantly. For the technologically handicapped, television is much simpler. You point the remote, you push a couple buttons, and there you have it.

Simple, easy, effective. Not necessarily always what you want (because we all know that even with 999 channels on satellite, there’s still ever anything on that you would ever want to watch) but you make do with what you have. Not only is it possible to watch TV on a PC, but TV will become obsolete within the next half century, much like the combination DVD/VHS player, the CD player, and 8-track tapes. The new generation lies simply the media capabilities of our handy dandy PCs. So to answer the question “can i watch tv programs on my pc?” the answer is yes!
